St. Gall Monastery Plan (Cod. Sang. 1092)

St. Gall Plan Website (Screenshot)

The St. Gall Plan website provides access to the earliest preserved visualization of a building complex from the Middle Ages and played a key role in the designation of the Abbey Library of St. Gall as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The plan document, Codex Sangallensis 1092, was commissioned by Abbot Gozbert of St. Gall and includes building and ground plans for an idealized Benedictine community complex, only some of which were actually carried out at St. Gall. Website databases provide extensive information about the plan document and Carolingian monastic culture. The website was developed at UCLA and University of Virginia with funding from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
